It is thought to be one of the oldest documented soil types, with relics of stone age cutting tools discovered on the estate thought to be between 1.4 and 1.9 million years old. These nutrient deficient soil types stress the vines to reduce yields and produce concentrated flavor compounds in the grapes. The 42 hectare (103 acre) estate has a cooling maritime mesoclimate thanks to the proximity to both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
