In 2001, 49 percent of teh company holdings were sold to Angostura Bitters. The sugarcane industry plummeted in the early 2000s and the Caroni Distillery lost its local source of molasses. Closure was inevitable. Angostura remains the only distillery in the country operating with molasses imported from Guyana. In 2004, Italian distributor Luca Gargano acquired the bonded warehouse with hundreds of barrels of rum. The first Velier Caroni rums were released in 2005, the same year the distillery was demolished. These rums as some of the last produced in Trinidad are therefor collectors item that are highly soughtafter.
