It is best known for its red wines made from Syrah and its white wines made from Marsanne and Roussanne. Jean Ferraton founded the estate in 1946 with a few tiny parcels of vines in Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage. His son Michel extended the vineyard holdings and built a winery on the Rhône river quayside at Tain l'Hermitage. In 1998, the Ferraton family partnered with Chapoutier, which provided expertise and financial backing. Chapoutier also offered assistance on a transition to organic, and then biodynamic, viticulture. Ferraton briefly run as a joint venture between the two companies, with Michel's son Samuel Ferraton managing the domaine. In 2004, Chapoutier bought Ferraton outright, but the operation is run as a separate enterprise and Samuel Ferraton remains at the helm.
