It is one of the country's most high-profile wineries. Operating under the Tierras de Armenia company, Karas sources fruit from around 400 hectares (1000 acres) of estate vineyards. Numerous varieties are planted on the dry, volcanic soils of the region, including Chardonnay, Viognier and the native Armenian white: Kangun. Red varieties include Argentinian flagship Malbec, Tannat, Syrah, Montepulciano, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The indigenous Areni and Khndoghni (also known as Sireni) are also used in the wines.
