      Detailed Description

There is a hint of bitter chocolate to the ripe aromas of plum, wild red berries, warm earth and whiffs of violet and anise. There is excellent volume to the bright and vivacious big-bodied flavors that possess fine mid-palate density on the silky but punchy, lingering and impeccably well-balanced finish that is supported by even firmer tannins.

        Reviews:

        • Decanter: Powerful dark plum and cassis fruit, with impressive structure and power. Despite the stuffing, this wine never loses sight of its elegance. Bravo! Domaine d’Eugénie is the current proprietor of this parcel which was once owned by Domaine René Engel. It is a 1.34ha plot that averages 60-70 years of age even with some interplanting; the youngest vines are all declassified. The parcel is not far from the Mugneret-Gibourg vines, but the style is very different. 70% whole-cluster.
        • Vinous: The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is raised with 70% whole bunch and around 80% new oak. Here, I feel that the stems are just jutting out a little more compared to the Grands Echézeaux and slightly obscures the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, fine backbone, perhaps without the same amplitude on the finish as either the Echézeaux or its "big brother". Still, this will give two or three decades of drinking pleasure.

        Producer Information

Domaine d'Eugénie is a wine producer in Burgundy's Vosne-Romanée known for its Pinot Noir. It was formed in 2006 from the esteemed vineyards of Domaine René Engel after the death of its proprietor, Philippe Engel, which included premier and grand cru plots. Francois Pinault, owner of Château Latour, bought the vineyards but not the winery. Following Engel's death in May 2005, the 2005 vintage of Domaine René Engel was sold in bulk. After the acquisition of the vineyards, Domaine D'Eugénie operated in an interim space at Domaine Lupé-Cholet in Nuits-Saint-Georges for the 2006, 2007 and 2008 vintages. In the interim, D'Eugénie established its own winery back in Vosne-Romanée, at the former Clos Frantin vineyard and buildings. These formerly belonged to Beaune-based wine estate Albert Bichot. Bichot retained the Clos Frantin brand. D'Eugénie upgraded all the facilities and renamed the monopole vineyard to Clos d'Eugénie. The domain farms 6.5 hectares (16 acres) in Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot and Flagey-Échezeaux. It produces six wines from five appellations: the grand crus Échezeaux, Grands Échezeaux and Clos de Vougeot, the premier cru Aux Brûlées and Vosne-Romanée Villages. In 2009, several parcels of vineyards began the conversion to biodynamic farming practices.
