The cellars are located in the village of Barolo, overlooking the Renaissance castle of the Marchesi Falletti di Barolo. Barolo as we know it today was first made in the early 19th century by the Marchese Carlo Tancredi Falletti di Barolo and his wife, Giulia. The wine from their estate soon became known as “the wine from Barolo”, served at important diplomatic and royal functions. The Marchesi had no children and following the death of the couple, the Marchesi di Barolo dynasty was left without an heir. Per the wishes of Marchesa Giulia, a great philanthropist, the family assets were donated to charity and a non-profit foundation was created in their name, “Opera Pia Barolo”, helping the most needy of nearby Torino. The sales of wine from their Barolo vineyards continue to fund the charity, which still exists today. Layers of fruit wrap around the palate in this flashy, seductive Pergole Torte. There are no hard edges to be found. Sweet red cherries, roses, spices and mint are layered into the silky, radiant finish. The 2009 is a wine of extraordinary elegance. Today the 2009 comes across as a smaller scaled version of the 2007. This is also the first year of biological farming at Montevertine. Despite the heat wave in August, Martino Manetti waited until October 12 to bring the Sangiovese in. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2039. In a week during which I tasted most of the reference point Sangioveses and Sangiovese-based reds, one wine stuck out - Le Pergole Torte. Quite honestly, I had a hard time getting to sleep the night I tasted these wines. They were that viscerally thrilling. Le Pergole Torte isn’t a great Tuscan or Italian wine. It traces its beginnings to back to 1967, when Sergio Manetti bought a vacation home in Chianti and planted two hectares (five acres) of vines with the intention of making some wine for friends and family. The first vintage in 1971 was such a success that Manetti took a few bottles to the Vinitaly wine show in Venice where the wine garnered such a positive reaction that Manetti made winemaking his new career. Montevertine is now known as a cult producer of high-quality, Sangiovese-dominant red wines from Tuscany. Montervertine was established within the boundaries of what became Chianti Classico and, initially, Manetti used the Chianti Classico designation for his wines. However, he soon became frustrated at the manditory inclusion of at least 10 percent of the white grape Trebbiano in the blend, and left the Chianti Classico Consortium in 1981. History sided with Manetti and, in 2006, Chianti Classico outlawed the use of white grapes. Despite the change, Montervertine still uses the broader IGT Toscana classification. As a result of this, Montevertine wines are often thought of as Super Tuscans, although none of the wines use any foreign grape varieties often associated with the category, like Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. All Montevertine wines are Sangiovese-dominant, with small amounts of Colorino and Canaiolo – making them classic Chianti blends. The Montevertine vineyards are some of the highest in Chianti with an elevation of 425 meters (1395 feet) above sea level. Around 90 percent of the vineyards are planted to the Sangiovese grape, with the rest yielding Colorino and Canaiolo. Montevertine is best known for the wine Le Pergole Torte – a single-vineyard offering from the original two hectares planted by Manetti. It is 100 percent Sangiovese, aged for 12 months in Slavonian oak and 12 months in French barriques from Allier. The palate is medium-bodied with a slight grainy texture on the entry, a hint of cooked meat inflecting the layers of toasty dark berry fruit. It is very harmonious and perhaps at this juncture, edgier and grittier than the millennial Unico. The estate in Ribera del Duero is known for its dense, complex red wines made principally from the Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) grape variety. Its top wine, Unico, is one of Spain's most expensive and sought-after wines. The Vega Sicilia estate covers around 1000 hectares (2470 acres) of which around 210ha (520 acres) is under vine. It has been in operation since 1864, long before the development of the appellation in which it resides, and the current wine styles date from the 1910s. Quality has become more consistent since the current owners, the Alvarez family, took over in 1982. The vineyards are planted to around 80 percent Tempranillo with the remainder taken up by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and tiny amounts of Malbec. Yields are kept low, aided by green harvesting and painstaking grape selection. Winery operations are just as meticulous, with a complicated series of rackings from large barrels to barriques, mixing old and new oak and leading to wines that are capable of long aging. Vega Sicilia makes three cuvées: Unico is the flagship, and the Reserva Especial is a blend of several of the best vintages. Traditionally they would be aged for 10 years or more before release, although this has been reduced in recent vintages. The junior wine, Valbuena, is made from younger vines, and is released after five years in American oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and even a bit more powerful at the core than the 1970, but with the same impeccable balance and grip, still a bit of modest tannin, tangy acids and great focus on the long, complex and simply stunning finish. I should note that we had this vintage again at our New York event in February, where we did not give it quite as much time in decanter, and the wine was still hunkered down and slightly closed, so make sure to treat the 1968 to plenty of aeration (two hours or more) prior to serving it, if you are interested in drinking it today! The bouquet is up front and very expressive from the get-go. It offers a generous display of crunchy, dark cherry that hints at the extra concentration and fruit weight obtained in the 2019 growing season. This vintage will be remembered for the crisp richness of the fruit and its important textural imprint. It also shows fine elegance, bordering on the ethereal, with berry aromas, tarry earth and brushes of balsam herb or grilled rosemary. Sassicaia always shows an almost-glossy finely knit quality to the polished mouthfeel, and I find it again here next to fresh acidity and firm tannins. Mouthfeel in 2019 is the wine's strongest suit. The 2019 is one of the prettiest and most balanced editions of Sassicaia we've seen this past decade, along with the back-to-back duo of 2016 and 2015. Taylor's changed hands often during the 19th and 20th Centuries, coming under control of both Joseph Taylor and John Fladgate, who gave the company its names. Initially these will contribute to the second wine, Mondot. The pre existing vineyards cover 33 hectares (81.5 acres). Soils are well draining limestone and clay, interspersed with chalk and flint. Troplong Mondot has a cooler climate, at a higher elevation, than most of Saint-Émillon. Under the previous owners it was one of the last to harvest grapes each year. The fruit will now be picked earlier, and previous extraction techniques replaced by more traditional processes. The grand vin is matured in 60 percent new oak which is untoasted, to deliver a less overtly oaky style than before. Positive reports of the 2018 suggest the wine will become fresher with more mineral characters, while retaining a silky texture.
