White Wine: 2018 | Egon Muller | Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Versteigerung (Half bottle)

Lush and generous on the palate, with a crystalline structure, this is a persistent Auslese with great energy and lingering salinity. It is made from perfectly dry botrytis, which gives a radiant, highly precise and fresh Auslese of great class.

      Detailed Description

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: The 2018 Scharzhofberger Auslese (AP #11) –Gold Capsule– is still covered by a layer of SO2, but flinty-mineral notes along with concentrated, terribly fresh and precise fruit already shine through. Lush and generous on the palate, with a crystalline structure, this is a persistent Auslese with great energy and lingering salinity. It is made from perfectly dry botrytis, which gives a radiant, highly precise and fresh Auslese of great class. The grapes for this AP #11 were picked a couple of days later than those for the Auslese #9.
        • Vinous: The substantial share of healthy fruit that was picked for this manifests itself in brightly fresh white peach and pear, alongside a syrupy element and jelled quince that point toward the nobly rotten portion of the harvest. Rather than a whiff of mushroom, as had been the case with the two “regular” selections of this collection, here there are musky, intriguingly animal manifestations of botrytis. The feel is glossy, subtly creamy, the finish rapier in its penetration and focus, yet setting one's whole mouth quivering with the vibrant energy by now familiar from other Müller 2018s. I can't see any reason why lucky owners should insist on deferring the pleasure of this wine's acquaintance, but I am also quite confident that the wine itself, not just that pleasure, will be long-lived.

        Producer Information

Weingut Egon Müller is a renowned wine estate based just outside the village of Wiltingen in the Saar valley sub-region of the Mosel in Germany. It exclusively works with the Riesling grape, and is particularly known for its wines made from the exceptional Scharzhofberg vineyard southeast of Wiltingen. The current manager is Egon Müller IV, who studied his craft at the leading winemaking university at Geisenheim. The Egon Müller wines are produced at a range of ripeness levels, including Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese, with Auslese Goldkapsel (literally "gold capsule") made in the best years. If conditions allow, sweet Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein are also produced. The estate in its present form dates back to 1797, when Jean-Jacques Koch acquired the Scharzhof farm from the French republic. His daughter married Felix Müller, and the estate has remained in the same family ownership ever since. Egon Müller also produces top-class Riesling with Miroslav Petrech in Slovakia under the Château Belá label. In the Adelaide Hills region of Australia he collaborates with Michael Andrewarta of East End Cellars to make the dry Kanta Riesling from a vineyard owned by Shaw + Smith.
