      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: The 100% Grenache 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Colombis is sourced from three different lieux-dits, each of which has sandy soils. In addition, the vines are all at least 60 years old. Matured in demi-muids, this beautiful wine features enthralling aromas of crushed stone, rose petals and ripe raspberries. Full-bodied and concentrated, the texture comes across as something weightless yet between silk and velvet, laced with exotic spices and lingering for minutes on the finish. It's another stunning example of Grenache from sand terroirs, and it's actually underpriced relative to its quality. Grab it while you can!
      • Jeb Dunnuck: A spitting image of the heavenly 2007, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Colombis is a huge, opulent Grenache that delivers everything you could want from this variety. Layers of kirsch liqueur, garrigue, licorice, and herbes de Provence just cascade over the palate. This literal bomb of a wine is full-bodied, concentrated, and layered, yet like all truly great wines, it remains pure, balanced and graceful, with no sense of heaviness. It will most likely merit a triple-digit score in another 2-3 years and will keep for another 10-15 years, but why wait?

      Producer Information

Domaine Saint Préfert is a wine estate based in the well-known Châteauneuf-du-Pape region of the southern Rhône Valley. The estate was founded by Fernand Serre around a century ago and was one of the first domaines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to sell its wine in bottles in the 1930s. Saint Préfert has been owned since 2003 by Isabel Ferrando and is best known for its quality production of traditional Châteauneuf red and white blends. The estate is located on an 80-hectare (198-acre) plot of land in the southwestern sector of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The vineyard is planted to some 13 hectares (32 acres) of vines that are around 60+ years old, producing low, concentrated yields. Some of the oldest vines on the estate are Mourvèdre, planted as far back as 1920, although there are also plantings of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsaut. Soils are composed of gravel, rock, stones, and large pebbles known as galets. Saint Préfert practices selection massale whereby vines are replanted with cuttings from the vineyard's exceptionally old vines. Domaine Saint Préfert's wine portfolio includes four Châteauneuf-du-Pape red blends, two Châteauneuf-du-Pape white blends, and a red Côtes du Rhône. The domaine's Vielles Vignes Clairette Blanc is unique to the lineup, made from 100 percent Clairette from dry-farmed vines that are as much as 100 years old. The wine is aged two years in wood before being bottled without filtration in magnum format bottles.
