Negro Mate Cupreata Mezcal Tasting Notes

Nose: Deep roasted agave, smoky embers, green herbs, citrus peel and subtle mineral dust.

Palate: Roasted agave core with peppery spice, herbal greens (sage/rosemary), mineral edge, light citrus and lingering smoke.

Finish: Long and warming; the earth and herbs fade slowly into roasted agave sweetness and a dry, smoky tail.

Distillery Information

Negro Mate focuses on artisanal mezcal production, specialising in lesser-known agave species such as Cupreata. The agave is roasted in traditional ovens, then fermented using wild yeasts and distilled to capture the full flavour profile of this varietal. Cupreata is a challenging plant to work with — it often grows in high-altitude, rocky soils, and requires careful handling to bring out its complexity rather than overpowering qualities. The brand’s production emphasises authenticity, sticking to traditional methods rather than heavy modern intervention. Although the brand may not have the long heritage of some legacy houses, its commitment to rare-agave expressions and craft production has placed it in the “serious enthusiast” category of mezcal lovers. The Cupreata expression isn’t designed for casual mixing but rather for sipping and contemplation, showcasing what non-Espadín agave can deliver in the hands of skilled mezcaleros.
