Sweet Wine: 2020 | Schloss Lieser | Niederberg Helden Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel (Half bottle)

First aromas of mangostino, apricot and tangerine peel. The precise vein of minerals forms a counterpoint to the extracted fruit nectar on the palate and is gently cut through by the Riesling acidity. A spring-like resilience develops towards one another.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: The 2020 Niederberg Helden Auslese –Goldkapsel– offers a very clear, intense and flinty bouquet that is very well defined and precise and provided with slate and lemon zest notes. Rich and lush but very refined on the palate, this is a round and fruity rather than sweet Auslese with crystalline and saline acidity that makes this a dancer on golden fruit. 7% stated alcohol. Natural cork.
        • Heiner Lobenberg: The local mountain of the Liesers. A warm southern slope with ancient vines, the oldest of the winery. Bell-clear, ultra-fine nose, floating, white peach, mirabelle plum, slender melon, lots of radiant lychee. So fine and delicate. The palate shows both the rich, extract-rich fruit ripening of the exposed Helden location and the fine, filigree fruit of the 2020 vintage. Intensity, length, finesse. Unfortunately, the gold capsules are incredibly rare this year. There was so extremely little botrytis in 2020 that there are hardly any noble sweet predicates. The Auslese GK is the top of the range this year. And it is an absolutely worthy coronation.

        Producer Information

Weingut Schloss Lieser is a German wine estate situated in the village of Lieser in the Mosel region. The estate cultivates 13 hectares (32 acres) of vineyards planted exclusively to Riesling. The estate includes plots in several Grosses Gewächs and Erste Lage classified vineyards, including Lieser Niederberg Helden and Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr. The vineyards are situated on entirely south- or southwest-facing slopes of typically slate soils on the banks of the Mosel river. This unique combination of location and soil supplies a mild mesoclimate and correspondingly long growing season whereby the slate soils absorb the sun's heat and the river acts as a reflector of the sun's rays to produce fine and fruity Riesling wines. Schloss Lieser's wines cover the spectrum from sweet to dry, with Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese and Auslese Goldkapsel, as well as the dry Grosses Gewächs and Erste Lage classified Riesling wines. Grapes are hand-harvested and slowly fermented in the presence of natural yeasts at cool temperatures. As soon as the desired residual sugar level is obtained, the wines are decanted and separated from the yeast. The winery was first established in 1904. It suffered a period of decline in the 1970s before it was acquired in 1992 by Thomas Haag, who raised the estate's status back to its previous standing as one of the top Riesling wine estates in Germany.
