        Producer Information

Domaine Chante Cigale is a wine estate based in the famous southern Rhône appellation Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is best known for its portfolio of red and white Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines produced under its traditional, Vieilles Vignes and Extrait labels, but it also makes a variety of Côtes du Rhône and IGP Méditérranée wines. The domaine has a history extending back to 1874 when Hyppolite Jourdan established Clos Chante Cigale, or "vineyard of the singing cicada". It became Domaine Chante Cigale in 1936 following the officiation of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Today, Chante Cigale is managed by Alexandre Favier. Domaine Chante Cigale's red Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are all Grenache-predominant, with the Extrait comprising 80 percent Grenache and 20 percent Mourvèdre. These grapes are sourced from the oldest of the domaine's vines, which average 100 years old. The traditional red Châteauneuf-du-Pape is made from a wider range of grape varieties including Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsaut, while the Vieilles Vignes is a GSM blend. The grapes are all hand-harvested. Following maceration and fermentation, the Vieilles Vignes and traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines age in a combination of concrete vats and new oak barrels. Equal quantities of Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc and Clairette are blended to create the traditional white Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine, while the Extrait is made from 100 percent Roussanne. Both expressions spend a maximum of six months aging on their lees. The Vieilles Vignes Côtes du Rhône is produced from 50-year-old Grenache, Carignan and Syrah vines. Domaine Chante Cigale also makes a small range of red, rosé and white IGP Méditérranée wines under its L'Apostrophe label.
