Gouden Carolus Belgian Single Malt Whisky

Het Anker in Mechelen, Belgium have been brewing beer for 5 generations. Gouden Carolus Single Malt is a whisky pot-distilled from the mash of the brewery's Tripel beer (malted barley, water, yeast). It benefits from double-maturation mostly in first-fill bourbon barrels, followed by extra-finishing in custom Het Anker barrels specified by the distillery. This is an update to the 2009 release of their whisky with the same name.

Gouden Carolus Belgian Single Malt Whisky Tasting Notes

Nose: This single malt from Het Anker pours with a golden straw color and invites sipping with aromas of cereal and lemon peel.

Palate: It's light-bodied with a palate that offers notes of honey, grain, pear, and lemon meringue. It's a delightful dram, and not just for Belgian beer lovers.

Finish: Smooth finish.

Distillery Information

Het Anker Brewery is a Flemish brewery in Mechelen, founded in 1471 by a community of Beguines. In 1872, the brewery was acquired by Louis Van Breedam, who renamed it Het Anker ("The Anchor") in 1904. Expanding its assortment from lager to ale, it began producing "Emperor beer" after World War II. In 1960 it renamed it "Gouden Carolus" (Golden Charles) after Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor (who was raised in Mechelen). They opened a brasserie and a hotel, and in 2010 began producing a single malt whisky, distilled from the Gouden Carolus Tripel.
