It has vineyards in some of the country's best winegrowing regions, including Aconcagua, the Limari Valley, Apalta, the Rapel Valley and the Casablanca Valley. Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère are Santa Rita's most important grape varieties, but wines are also made from Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Chardonnay. Santa Rita was founded in 1880 by Domingo Fernández Concha. Considerable wealth from mining in the Atacama desert was flowing into Santiago at the time and a wine industry sprang up just south of the city. Santa Rita, along with its contempories Cousiño Macul and Concha Y Toro, introduced vines from France and began to make wine. Today, Santa Rita has five wineries across Chile with the combined capacity to produce and store nearly 90 million liters of wine. The company's diversity of vineyards means a diverse portfolio. For instance, Santa Rita's vineyards in the Limari Valley are planted on alluvial soils and there is a warm Mediterranean climate, so Chardonnay, Carmenère and Syrah do well. However, in Leyda Valley, the fine clay soils and the cooler climate are better suited to Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Santa Rita's flagship wine is the Casa Real, a Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from vineyards surrounding the Maipo estate. It is aged for 14 months in new French and American oak before release, and can be happily cellared for a decade or so. Another key wine is the Bougainville Petite Sirah, a premium red made from a grape variety not usually seen in Chile. Other notable wines in the Santa Rita portfolio include the Reserva range, the Medalla Real range, and the entry-level 120 range.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0050/2395/7103/files/52_d3d02cfc-2b67-4cb6-9f0f-62970105bb32.png?v=1694721713
2022-chateau-picque-caillou-pessac-leognan-blanc
2022 | Château Picque Caillou | Pessac-Leognan Blanc

White Wine: 2022 | Château Picque Caillou | Pessac-Leognan Blanc

The name Caillou refers to pebbles, reflecting the fact that this was once riverbed, when the river Garonne overflowed millions of years ago. Originally established in 2003 by Lewis E. Platt, the vineyard’s meticulously planted vines quickly earned a reputation as a source of superlative fruit for many of California's top winemakers. Its 2022 acquisition by AXA Millesimes - the group behind prestigious estates including Chateau Pichon Baron and Chateau Suduiraut - marks the estate's exciting transition to producing its own wines. The winemaking is steered by the acclaimed consulting winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown. Brown is a vintner recognized for a historic record of perfect critical scores, being the youngest American to earn two 100-point ratings from Robert Parker and the only winemaker to achieve the same feat with Wine Spectator. It was, in fact, the exceptional quality of the wines he made from Platt's grapes that gave AXA the confidence to purchase the vineyard. The character of the vineyard is fundamentally shaped by its dramatic coastal terroir just 10 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean and its fine Goldridge soils. The estate focuses on sustainable farming across approximately 11 hectares of Pinot Noir and just under 6 hectares of Chardonnay. Established in 1886 by Victorian widow Josephine Tychson, she was the first female winemaker on record in Napa Valley, and the winery was the 16th bonded winery on record in the region. It was the only winery to have both a red and white wine represented in the famous Judgement of Paris tasting of 1976. Although geographically located just north of Saint Helena town, Freemark Abbey produces a range of wines from select vineyards in Napa Valley, focusing mainly on Cabernet Sauvignon from Rutherford. Two of the most well-known are the Bosché Cabernet and Sycamore Vineyard Cabernet, both sourced from the Rutherford Bench. A smaller number of different varieties are also made, including Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Chardonnay, Viognier, and Sauvignon Blanc. The wines are predominantly labeled as single varieties. The wines, particularly the Cabernet Sauvignons, are noted for their elegance and longevity. The winery has a storied history. After starting the winery in 1886, Tychson sold the property to her friend Antonio Forni in 1898, who renamed it Lombarda Cellars. Forni built the original winery structure that still stands today. After a twenty-year closure due to prohibition, the property was sold to California businessmen Charles Freeman, Marquand Foster, and Albert “Abbey” Ahern in 1939. Combining their names to form Freemark Abbey, the trio established one of the first tasting rooms in the area.
