It is one of only six dedicated grain distilleries in Scotland, and is famous for their Coffey stills, from which they produce some of the finest grain whisky in the world. The Navy withdrew from the town in 1956, leaving a peak of unemployment after which Invergordon was ready to welcome some industrial infrastructure. Oddly, it is based in a region associated with malt distilling, though the combination of easily accessible cereal crops and its port set it as an ideal site for a grain distillery. After a series of owners, Invergordon was absorbed into Whyte \u0026amp; Mackay in 1993, and the majority of liquid distilled goes into Whyte \u0026amp; Mackay blends.
