Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: This fabulous, blockbuster has been totally unevolved since bottling, but at the Jaboulet tasting, it was beginning to reveal some of its formidable potential. A saturated opaque purple color is followed by aromas of cassis, minerals, and hot bricks/wood fire. Super-ripe and full-bodied, with a massive mid-section, teeth-staining extract, and mouth-searing tannin, it is a monster-sized La Chapelle.
- James Suckling: I have always been a huge fan of this wine, with incredible depth and richness of character. Dried meat, game, berry, spice, asphalt and tar. Full body with layers of ripe tannins and spice. It goes on for minutes on the finish. This is a fabulously spicy with black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, black truffles, sous bois and licorice. Decant two or three hours before serving. Purity and balance. This is the legendary 1961 again.
Producer Information
Domaine de la Chapelle is the new, distinct estate identity for the famous Hermitage red wine and its white counterpart Le Chevalier de Sterimberg. Both were formerly labelled as part of the Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné portfolio. The change is intended to recognize the work done by President and winemaker Caroline Frey since her arrival in 2005 and giving a clearer indication of excellence. Accordingly, a new dedicated winery is under construction as of 2023. The wines are now to be released to the market via the Place de Bordeaux to brokerage markets. There are 26 hectares (64 acres) of vineyard; the Jaboulet family have owned vines on the Hermitage slopes since 1919. The conversion to organic farming began soon after Frey took the reins, with certification achieved in 2016. The vines have been biodynamically farmed since 2018.
