Dense ruby red, clear and consistent, olfactory very powerful, extensive and fine. The first impression is of balsamic, almost iodine-like notes, transported by the remarkable alcoholic content, to immediately reveal the characteristic scent of ripe cherries, plums, vanilla and ginger. Tertiary aromas of cocoa, chocolate, tar, almonds, roasted hazelnuts and pipe tobacco follow on the heels.

      Detailed Description

Dense ruby red, clear and consistent, olfactory very powerful, extensive and fine. The first impression is of balsamic, almost iodine-like notes, transported by the remarkable alcoholic content, to immediately reveal the characteristic scent of ripe cherries, plums, vanilla and ginger. Tertiary aromas of cocoa, chocolate, tar, almonds, roasted hazelnuts and pipe tobacco follow on the heels. The palate is dry, warm and soft, well supported by a remarkable acidity, of great palatability and equipped with an enveloping tannic structure. As it progresses, it is balanced, very persistent and fine. Undoubtedly a highly elegant, complex wine monument.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: This wine leaves a big impact, there's no escaping that brawn, shaped by the appassimento process in which the grapes lose up to one-third of their water volume before being pressed. The results deliver more extract, more sugar, ultimately more alcohol and much more flavor intensity and textural richness. The finish shows cinnamon, black tar, campfire smoke and syrupy blackberry preserves.
        • James Suckling: Intense dried black fruit with immediate notes of graphite, kalonji spice and dark chocolate. Much more on the nose if you linger. Full-bodied with an almost fruit-liqueur sensation on the palate.

              Producer Information

Tenuta Sant'Antonio is a winery located in the Monti Garbi area of Verona, near Lake Garda. The winery is owned by four brothers: Armando, Paolo, Tiziano, and Massimo Castagnedi, and produces Soave, Valpolicella and Amarone wines. The estate is made up of 50 hectares (124 acres) of vineyards – 30 hectares (74 acres) around Mezzane and 20 hectares (50 acres) in San Zeno di Colognola ai Colli in the Valpolicella district. Grape varieties grown in these vineyards include classic regional varieties Corvina, Molinara, Rondinella, Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave, and more international varieties like Chardonnay. Both the red and white wines are aged in contact with their lees, and are mixed in stainless steel wine jars and later via the tradtional bâtonnage method in barrel. They are then filtered just a few days before bottling. Tenuta Sant'Antonio's flagship wine is an Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva named Lilium Est. The wine is made by the appassimento process where after harvest, the grapes are dried for several weeks on bamboo racks or straw mats, to concentrate sugars for increased body and intensity of flavor. Sant'Antonio makes a range of other wines under various other DOC and IGT titles, including the value Scaia range and the sulphite-free Telos range.
