        Producer Information

Markos Markovitis is the third generation to run the family's winery in Naoussa, in the prefecture of Macedonia. Markos's Grandfather (also named Markos) planted the first four HA of vines in 1972 and built the winery in 1979. The first vintage was made by Markos's father, Dimitrios, in 1981 under the name Chateau Pegasus. Dimitrios and his brother Trifon ran the estate until Markos took over in 2012. He then changed the name to Markovitis Winery. The current Markos is part German and studied winemaking there, working in many fine wineries. He has an anti-establishment edge and will not be found on social media. His wife, Sofia Chaitidou, is part of the team focusing on marketing and distribution. Markos makes one wine- Xinomavro. Despite his lack of an online presence, he has made a name for himself in Greece and has a cult following. Markos sets out to make the best, high-class Xinomavro he can with a low-intervention, lighter style. Terroir: Markovitis Winery is located in the northern part of Greece at the base of Mt. Vermio in the western part of the prefecture of Macedonia at 240-250 meters high. Viticulture: Markovitis is farmed organically and is considered to be the first in all of Greece to do so. Markos wants his vines to grow in harmony with the land to express the terroir fully. The soil is not tilled, and there are no herbicides. Vine cuttings after pruning are used as natural compost.Vinification: All grapes are hand-picked and de-stemmed with minimal intervention. Natural yeast fermentation is done in stainless steel tanks. The wines are matured in 500L 10-30-year-old Hungarian oak. The dedication to grow only Xinomavro has allowed the Markovitis Winery to excel in producing a top-quality wine.
