Detailed Description

Ninth in the Penderyn Icons of Wales series, this one is named 'The Headliner' after David Llyod George (1863-1945), the only Welsh Prime Minister and creator of the Immature Spirits Act 1915, which specified whisky must be matured for a minimum of three years. This likely annoyed a lot of distilleries at the time, but is said to have helped shape the image of whisky as a premium product. This particular whisky was matured in Jamaican rum and Port casks, bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered, for plenty of rich berry and spice notes.

Distillery Information

Penderyn is a Welsh distillery and whisky brand, known for its award-winning single malt whiskies. The Penderyn distillery is located in the Brecon Beacons National Park, in the historic village of Penderyn. Penderyn single malt whisky is made using the traditional pot still method, and is matured in ex-bourbon barrels. Penderyn also produces a peated single malt whisky, which is matured in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in Islay peated whisky barrels. Penderyn has won numerous awards for its whiskies, including Gold medals at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, and the World Whisky Awards. There is some evidence that the Welsh practised distillation as early as the fourth century. Allegedly, Reaullt Hir distilled on Bardsey Island around this time. The early drink was distilled from barley, yeast and honey. The Welsh Whisky Company was founded in 1998 and the first spirit ran from the stills of the Penderyn Distillery in September of 2000. The locality is rather beautiful, sitting in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The first whisky was launched on St David’s Day, 1st March 2004. The wash is brought in from S A Brain & Co, a beer brewer.
