Producer Information
Weingut St. Urbans-Hof is a German wine producer located in the Mosel. The family-owned estate was founded by Nicolaus Weis in 1947 and has been managed by third generation family member, Nik Weis, since 1997. The estate has been part of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) since 2000 and is known for producing a range of Riesling wines from well-known vineyards including Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, Leiwener Laurentiuslay and Ockfener Bockstein. The estate's vineyards are located on steep slopes along the Mosel River at Laurentiuslay, Goldtröpfchen and Mehringer and along the Saar River at Bockstein, Saarfeilser and Wiltinger. One of St. Urbans-Hof's best parcels is at Goldtröpfchen where the soils are amongst the stoniest and craggiest of the entire 65 hectare (161 acre) vineyard. This site is planted to ungrafted Riesling vines planted over 100 years ago. Wines produced from this well-known vineyard are traditionally left with residual sweetness. Weingut St. Urbans-Hof's wines are sorted into two collections: white label and black label. The white label is a range of dry wines and includes a Gutsriesling Troken as well as wines produced from the Mehringer, Wiltinger, Saarfeilser and Laurentiuslay vineyards. The black label includes Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese Rieslings from the Bockstein and Goldtröpfchen vineyards as well as a Gutsriesling – a classic representative of Mosel Riesling. In the winery, exclusively wild yeasts from the vineyard and winery are employed for the fermentation process. The company also includes one of the first privately owned nurseries in Germany that operates on the sélection massale principle.
