        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: One of the undeniable stars of the vintage, the 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve is a blockbuster in a year that did not generally produce wines of such power and richness (of course, it includes the declassified Vieilles Vignes cuvee in the blend). A deep purple color is followed by aromas of cassis, kirsch liqueur, flowers, plums, and blackberries. Full-bodied, multi-layered, and fabulously extracted, with low acidity, sweet tannin, and magnificent purity, this is a sumptuous, prodigious Chateauneuf du Pape that should drink well for 15-20 years. It is hard to believe that something this special could have been produced in 1999, but there are a half dozen or so wines at this level in 1999.
        • Vinous: Bright ruby-red. Perfumed aromas of cassis, violet pastille and mint. Dense but juicy and penetrating, with enticing flavors of black fruits, licorice and mint. Tightly wound but already quite aromatic in the middle and on the very long finish. Structured to age.

        Producer Information

Domaine de la Vieille Julienne is a Rhône Valley producer known for its Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate is based in Les Grès in the northern part of the appellation where it produces the common Rhône varieties Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Counoise and Cinsaut. The domaine was formed in 1905 and has been owned by the Daumen family ever since. It wasn't until the 1960s that Vieille Julienne began to bottle and release its own wines. It gained critical recognition and popularity in the 1990s after a focused effort to reduce yields. The Vieille Julienne Reserve Châteauneuf-du-Pape was first released in 1994 to critical acclaim, and has received 100-point scores from Robert Parker for several of its vintages. Vieille Julienne has 10 hectares (25 acres) under vine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a further 5 hectares (12 acres) of Côtes du Rhône vineyards. Grenache is the most important variety, making up 60 percent of the flagship Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine, and the majority of all of the other red blends. The reserve is 95 percent Grenache and comes from the domaine's oldest vines, some of which are a century old.
