Red Wine: 2018 | Homefire of Sonoma | Hales Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel

This was obviously a denser, deeper, richer wine than the normal Homefire. It had more of a combination of black and red fruit. The fruit character is ripe, slightly jammy, dried (like a fruit leather, not raisinated). The oakiness in the wine is balanced, with subtle cocoa and carob notes.

Homefire Vineyard – We wanted to show that wines are better if made from vineyards that use organic-style farming methods. We created this vineyard from the ground up. The top 12-inches of soil are loam which becomes increasingly dense with depth. Our initial collection of Zinfandel vines are a St Peter’s Church clone grafted onto 110R rootstock which is well-suited to our soil conditions. The soil is balanced with natural components including more than 12-tons of compost per acre to date. Hales Vineyard – The old vines were planted in 1952. Half the vineyard is trellised, the other half, head pruned. Wilfred Wong calls the wine produced from these vines “classic Dry Creek Zin.” Mia’s Secret – This vineyard lies on a slope 1,200 feet above the valley. You’ll cross a couple streams and a washed out road to get there. But Zinfandel grown there is unlike any we’ve tasted; rich, mountain fruit, dark berry flavors and an exotic essence unique to the site.
