2017 | Emmanuel Rouget | Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux 1er Cru, matured in 100% new oak, has a flamboyant bouquet. Red berry fruit, veins of blue fruit, crushed violet, fig and Medjool dates - this is quite exotic and yet beautifully controlled. The palate is medium-bodied with an almost lactic opening, fleshy and deep, with a persistent, sweet confit-like finish.

• Wine Advocate: Rouget opted to mature the 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village in a mere 30% new oak this year, hoping to preserve the purity of the vintage's fruit, and the result is a beautifully balanced wine that bursts from the glass with aromas of smoky raspberries, sweet spices and candied peel. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and expressive with melting tannins and a gourmand but succulent core of fruit, concluding with a beautifully delineated finish.

• Burghound: A classic Vosne nose offers up a lovely array of spice elements on the overtly floral nose of mostly red and dark pinot fruit where a hint of sandalwood lurks in the background. The sleek and more refined if not quite as concentrated flavors culminate in a delicious, dusty and balanced finale. This needs to add depth in order to achieve the upper end of my projected range but the underlying material is present for that to occur.

Often mentioned in the same breath as his famed uncle (the late Henri Jayer) Emmanuel Rouget is a well-regarded Burgundy producer in his own right. Having taken over the farming of the Jayer brothers' (Henri, Lucien and Georges) holdings, Rouget produces sought-after Pinot Noirs from sought-after vineyards from his base in Flagey-Echézeaux.Emmanuel Rouget first began selling wines under his own name when working as sharecropper of vineyards owned by different members of his family. In 1996 Jayer passed the vineyards to Rouget but continued to bottle some wines under his own name until his full retirement in 2001 – subsequent vintages carry Rouget's name and command ultra-premium prices, though not as high as his uncle's.
