      Detailed Description

A giant Alsace pinot gris that’s brimming with smoke, caramelized-pear, cooked-quince and mushroom aromas. Very deep and ripe, but with spot-on harmony, the hint of grape sweetness beautifully woven into its rich and very complex texture. Astonishing finish that’s creamy and salty, smoky and stony all at once. From biodynamically grown grapes.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Enthusiast: Smoky stoniness initially fills the nose on this wine. With a little more air, pear fruitiness comes though while a flinty glint of reduction smoulders in the background. The palate comes with the gentlest sweetness and still needs to knit together. Ample fruit, great energy and immense concentration are all evident in one juicy sip. This is a powerhouse of a wine, coiled tightly and streamlined into a toned swoop. It will release its force in due course.
        • Wine Spectator: Sleek acidity frames this dense, finely knit white, which opens slowly on the palate, revealing detailed notes of nectarine and star fruit, apple blossom and ground ginger, blanched almond and honeycomb. There's power here, in a sculpted, compact form, and the minerally underpinning, loaded with smoke and saline, echoes on the lasting finish.

        Producer Information

The Domaine Zind-Humbrecht was created in 1959 by the merging of two families, that on Zenon Humbrecht, viticulteur in Gueberschwihr, and that of Emile Zind, viticulteur in Wintzenheim, with the marriage of their children, Leonard Humbrecht and Ginette Zind. Before this date both families produced and sold their wines separately. Domaine Humbrecht had been passed from father to son since the Thirty Years War (1620). The vinification is now in the hands of Oliver Humbrecht, son of Ginette and Leonard. In 1995, Robert Parker called Oliver's 1993's "The wine of a genius".
