      Detailed Description

Only 380 numbered bottles were made, Kopke CNK is an homage to the House’s founder, Cristiano Nicolau Kopke
It is a blend, the oldest is a Colheita 1900. Kopke CNK Very Old Tawny Port has a mahogany colour streaked by greenish hues. The nose reveals notes of spice, fig, almond, walnut, coffee, chocolate and a hint of snuff… And then, on the palate, flavours of jelly, cinnamon, resin, curry and balsamic. The balance between sweetness and acidity is perfect, its finish is powerful but fresh, and lengthy.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: The NV CNK Very Old Tawny Port is a tribute to Cristiano Nicolau Kopke and the 380th anniversary of Kopke (a rather odd anniversary—375, 350, 400—but 380?). The anniversary date aside, it comes in with 171 grams of residual sugar. The average age of the blend is 91 to 92 years, with wines from the 1920s, 1930s and older. Beautifully done, this certainly has very mature nuances, with plenty of molasses and hints of treacle here and there to go with the caramel and chocolate, but the vibrant acidity makes it seem young and alive. It just lifts the fruit and makes this sing. The finish is powerful, intense and very long. There's a lot of bite there. I don't expect Very Old Tawnies to be very young, and this isn't, but it does everything I want in a Very Old Tawny. There were 380 bottles (the anniversary) produced. This has a bar-top cork. It will last for decades if the cork stays intact, but it is made for drinking today. Tawnies don't require bottle aging.

        Producer Information

Kopke is the oldest Port house, founded in 1638. It also produces a range of Douro DOC table wines The business was founded by Nicolau Köpke, the Consul General of the Hamseatic League. He shipped his first wine bottles back to North Europe two years after first moving from Hamburg to Portugal. In 1781 the house bought a farm in the Douro, thereby transitioning from wine shipper to producer, with a greater focus on Port fortified wines. Quinta de São Luiz in the Cima Corgo was purchased in 1922. It has since become the property where all the company's table wines are produced, and is considered one of the premier wine farms in the region.
