It is particularly known for its flagship Bordeaux Blend wine, Cain Five, made from grapes sourced from the estate.Cain got its start in 1980 when Jerry and Joyce Cain purchased 550 acres (220 hectares) of the McCormick Ranch on Spring Mountain. The former sheep farm was planted to five typical Bordeaux grape varieties – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec – with the intention of making a brawny mountain Napa Cabernet blend.The vineyard spans altitudes of 1400-2100ft (425-640m) above sea level, and is nestled in a bowl shape at the top of the Spring Mountain AVA, just beside the Sonoma border.The first vintage of Cain Five was released in 1985.
