      Detailed Description

Deep dark ruby garnet with an opaque core, purple reflections, and a light watery edge. Blackberries and liquorice on the nose, with a fine woody savouriness in the background. The palate is intense and packed with dark nougat notes and very powerful tannins wrapped around a core of sweet, persistent fruit. A salty touch to the long finish.

        Producer Information

Domaine de la Chapelle is the new, distinct estate identity for the famous Hermitage red wine and its white counterpart Le Chevalier de Sterimberg. Both were formerly labelled as part of the Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné portfolio. The change is intended to recognize the work done by President and winemaker Caroline Frey since her arrival in 2005 and giving a clearer indication of excellence. Accordingly, a new dedicated winery is under construction as of 2023. The wines are now to be released to the market via the Place de Bordeaux to brokerage markets. There are 26 hectares (64 acres) of vineyard; the Jaboulet family have owned vines on the Hermitage slopes since 1919. The conversion to organic farming began soon after Frey took the reins, with certification achieved in 2016. The vines have been biodynamically farmed since 2018. This is made from Syrah from the most stony sections of the Méal, Bessard, Rocoules and Greffieux parcels. Vines are between 40 and 100 years old. The wine is prized for its silkiness, dark fruit characters and tight tannic structure. It is capable of ageing gracefully over many decades. This white wine has in the past been a combination of Marsanne and Roussanne though the 2021 release was made entirely from Marsanne grown on loess and pebble soils, particularly the Murets Plateaux and Maison Blanche plots. The Roussanne does best on clay-limestone areas. Henri-Gaspard de Stérimberg was a returning crusading knight who, seeking serenity, settled on the hill in 1225, becoming the hermit behind its name. He built the chapel on the site of a Roman temple dedicated to Hercules, and cultivated vines on the slope.
