Retribution Single Malt English Whisky | 700ML

This is the second English single malt to be released to the public from Somerset's Retribution Distilling Co., drawn from one of the first casks to be laid down. The distillery uses a pair of handmade, direct-fired copper pot stills, custom-made to its own design within 40 miles of its Somerset home. Distilled from malted laureate barley, the whisky spent three years and four months maturing in a quarter cask that previously held Buffalo Trace bourbon, bringing creamy layers of toffee and butterscotch. A batch of 170 bottles at a hearty 53.3% ABV.

Retribution Single Malt English Whisky | 700ML Tasting Notes

Nose: Lemon Puff biscuits, a balance of sweet malty biscuit, and citrus flavours. Some delicate floral notes alongside summer grasses. A drop of water brings crisp green apple, vanilla cream, and the citrus turns more orange blossom.

Palate: Sweet, malty, with some peppery warmth on first sip. Clean and fruity with tangy sherbet reminiscent of a Sherbet Orange sweets. With water, ripe barley leads a pleasant, light, oily mouthfeel, with a soft orange blossom honey sweetness.

Finish: Medium length, soft malt, with that signature orange citrus lingering.

Distillery Information

Small-batch, high-flavour spirits are at the core of Retribution, which makes rum and gin as well as whisky. The latter is currently maturing, but we’ve tasted an array of new make and it’s bonkers how good it is already. Local ingredients are used where possible and all mashing, fermenting, distillation (direct-fired stills made to specification), and maturation occur on-site to ensure the spirits have a sense of place that is rooted in the Somerset countryside. In 2023, the brand will fill around 30 casks split between whisky and rum production, and over the coming years, Retribution will be experimenting with a variety of grains, including darker malts (kilned and roasted), yeast, and cask types. There are even plans to build a malt kiln to produce Somerset peated malt. Seriously exciting stuff.
