2006 | Domaine des Comtes Lafon | Meursault Goutte d`Or

Brisk, slightly metallic aromas of lime, minerals and menthol. Juicy, sweet and intense; round and full but also showing more power than the Clos de la Barre. But then this has not yet been fined. There's nothing exotic or over the top about this '06.

• Wine Advocate: 2006 Meursault Gouttes d’Or displays ripe pear and apple, along with a prominent alkaline mineral character. Penetrating, bright, and overtly chalky, this finishes with a long fruit and mineral colloquy, and invigoratingly bitter hints of citrus zest and quinine. I suspect this Meursault – which Lafon was set to bottle last – can be counted on for 7-10 years of interesting bottle maturation. The 2005 – plush wine with a spine – exhibits a saline, carnal intensity that calls to mind Chablis.

• Burghound: A maturing nose displays notes of pain grillé that frame aromas of roasted nuts, peach, pear, anise and clove that evidence almost no exotic elements. There is good richness to the full-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract that confers a textured and seductive texture to the beautifully long and silky finish. This is not especially elegant but the depth and punch are impressive plus in the context of the vintage, this finishes quite dry. Note that for my taste this has arrived at its apogee though it should continue to hold well for another 5ish+ years if desired.

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is a wine producer in Burgundy making some of the most lauded (and highly priced) white wines from Chardonnay in the region. It is located in Meursault in the Côte de Beaune subregion, but has vineyards in three other villages: Chassagne-Montrachet, Volnay and Monthélie.Comtes Lafon's house and cellar were built in 1869 by the Boch family, but its reputation as a winery was most heavily influenced by Jules Lafon, who married Marie Boch in 1894. Lafon bought many of the significant premier cru plots in Meursault and Volnay, and in 1919, parcels in the grand cru Le Montrachet vineyard.Domaine des Comtes Lafon saw an extended period of sharecropping after Jules Lafon's death and the future of the estate became uncertain. It was Jules' grandson René Lafon who took an interest in the winery and fought to stop the division of the vineyards – a move that secured the future of the domaine.
