In an interesting bit of geographic coincidence, the bodega’s humble installations are just a few blocks away from the Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Jerez de la Frontera, a small museum which nonetheless boasts a fine collection of artifacts dating back to the Paleolithic Age, including many objects related to the region’s 3,000-plus-year history of wine production.In many ways, Bodegas Tradición has more in common with the archaeological museum than it does with a conventional winery. Tradición is one of the youngest outfits in the region, yet it houses some of the oldest wines. The vineyards are planted on volcanic soils and cover 26 hectares (65 acres) of land on the island. Native grape varieties like Assyrtico, Athiri and Aidani are planted here, making wines in a range of styles, from dry whites to sweet vinsanto. The estate was originally founded in 1903 by Georgios Argyros, who started making local wines using traditional Santorinian methods. When the estate passed to Matthew Argyros in 1950, he expanded the vineyards to 6 hectares (15 acres), and then in 1974, when his son Yiannis Argyros took over, the vineyard holdings increased again to 26 hectares (65 acres). In 2004 Yannis passed the running of the estate to his son who is also named Matthew. Argyros' vineyards are situated at altitudes ranging from 35-150m (115-500ft) above sea level, on the classic, dark volcanic soils of the island. The vines are cultivated in the traditional basket style, called \"kouloura\" or \"Gyristo\", which shelters the grapes from Santorini's strong winds. The Assyrtiko Argyros is the estate's flagship wine and dates back to the founding of the estate in 1903. It was was founded in 1896 by José Ruiz-Berdejo as an almacenista, which also grew its own vines. Almacenistas generally bought young wine (Ruiz made his own) and matured them in their own soleras, before selling them to larger houses, who would either blend it with older wine, or mature it longer in their larger soleras. It wasn't until the 1950s that Ruiz's son-in-law Emilio Lustau Ortega began bottling and exporting his own wine. Now based in Jerez, Lustau is the only winery that has sites in all three cities of the Sherry triangle: Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Lustau buys fruit from vineyards, while also maintaining two of its own. The first is the Montegilillo vineyard, which is on the white limestone albariza soil local to the region. The second is the Las Cruces vineyard, which is on sandy coastal soils. Lustau now produces a range of Sherry, but achieves the most recognition for its Almacenista collection. Continuing the tradition, the collection is series of single offerings from smaller producers that Lustau bottles and distributes.
