Producer Information
Founded in 1852, their Winery is the oldest 7th-generation family-run business in the hilly DOCG area between the towns of Romagnano Sesia and Ghemme, Lower Valsesia, Northeastern Piedmont Region, Italy. This is a well-known wine-producing territory with family traditions and values handed down from the past to the present. Their Winery is headquartered in Romagnano Sesia and is nestled on a hilltop outside of town with a stunning view of south-west facing rolling vineyards, the Sesia River and Monte Rosa, the second highest peak in the Alps. Ghemme Wine DOCG (Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin) and Colline Novaresi Wines DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) are produced all over the area shared by Romagnano Sesia and Ghemme. The story of their family enterprise is one that has been etched out of tradition and flavoured with true passion and positive energy, with unwavering dedication to quality for seven generations in a row. According to historical documents, the story began in 1852, when Michelangelo Ioppa originally purchased the best vineyard land in the local hills (including Balsina vineyards), still grown nowadays. And today, almost two centuries later, the story continues with the same passion, hard work and perseverance. Armed with generations of winemaking and grape growing experience behind them, and thanks to the goals achieved by Pietro Ioppa , one of the promoters of DOC Ghemme Wine in 1968, they look ahead with optimism and search for higher and higher quality standards. In 2003 they moved the Winery to its current location among vineyards in Frazione Mauletta, a hilly hamlet on the outskirts of Romagnano Sesia. Their new facility has plenty of space to grow our winery in the coming years, including new-style cellar using cutting-edge wine-making equipment, wine aging room and expansion, showroom and sales outlet. Always committed to improving our wine production and achieving excellence, they employ state-of-the art high-tech machinery with the aim to perfectly combine tradition and innovation and fully respect the unique characteristics of our terroir. In order to pick up ripe and healthy grapes and maximize fruit quality at harvest time, they make selective leaf removal in summer, and by estimating the crop load on the vines we reduce yields on the onset of ripening. Crop thinning depends on wine varieties. Moreover, they apply proven sustainable agricultural practices safeguarding both the natural environment and the health of our consumers. Their commitment naturally begins in the vineyards, where in compliance with P.S.R. 10.1 (Application of integrated production technologies) only environment-friendly products such as organic fertilizers and certified organic treatments for fungal disease are used. Thanks to their accurate monitoring and a breezy microclimate, anti-botrytis treatments are not needed.
