        Reviews:

        • James Suckling: Layered, lovely and admired by all, including Geoff, for its big, open bouquet of black and red berries, chocolate and a cool menthol-eucalyptus note. Lovely tart-sweet fruit shows on the palate, offset by mineral notes and tangy oak. Again, a fine sense of balance shows, and the wine closes long with crisp acidity and full tannins, promising plenty of life.

        Producer Information

Geoff Merrill Wines is a South Australian wine producer based in the Adelaide suburbs, with vineyards in McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. It is best known for Shiraz from the former plus Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from the latter. The range also includes Cabernet Sauvignon - Merlot and Southern Rhône-style blends partnering Syrah with Grenache and Mourvedre. Varietal Sangiovese and Riesling wines also feature. Merrill began his career in wine at the age of 17 in 1964 when he started a four-year traineeship at Seppelts in the Barossa. After a spell in Stellenbosch, South Africa, he joined Chateau Reynella in McLaren Vale in late 1975, becoming Senior Winemaker two years later and holding the position until 1985. He then worked as Consultant Winemaker for the property's owner, Thomas Hardy & Sons. Merrill is strongly associated with an heroic, luxuriant moustache, occasionally reaching full Merv Hughes handlebar proportions. In recent years this seems to have sadly succumbed to beard sprawl.
