It was founded in 2002 as a partnership between Andalucia producer Jorge Ordóñez, Australian winemaker Chris Ringland, and Bodegas Borsao, one of the largest and most influential producers in the Campo de Borja appellation. The Alto Moncayo vineyards cover 92 hectares (227 acres) around the town of Borja in the heart of the DO. These vineyards are located in the foothills of the Moncayo Massif: namely Ainzón, Fuendejalón and Tabuenca. The vines sit at altitudes that range between 1600-2600ft (490-790m) above sea level. The soil has a high stone content and is made up of limestone, marl and slate, a composition that makes for excellent drainage and encourages deep root sets toward a layer of water-retaining clay. Alto Moncayo produces a trio wines, all sourced from old-vine Garnacha which produce low yields of grapes with concentrated flavor compounds.
