Romanée-Saint-Vivant offers an intense nose with fruity aromas (cherry, blackberry, raspberry) as well as notes of violet. It evolves after a few years towards notes of undergrowth and leather. On the palate, it is distinguished by great depth and admirable density, it delivers silky tannins and great aromatic complexity. This wine can be enjoyed with refined red meat dishes: fillet of beef with truffles, duck in blood or chicken with porcini mushrooms.

• Wine Advocate: The most backward cuvée in the cellar when I visited was the 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, a rich and muscular wine that unwinds to reveal notions of cherries, cassis and berries mingled with nuances of exotic spice and new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, fleshy and structured, with refined but youthfully assertive tannins. A wine of considerable presence, this will need its remaining élevage to round out, but it's very promising.

• Vinous: The 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is matured in 20% new oak. It has a very intense bouquet of bright red currant, wild strawberry, pomegranate and rose petal aromas that feels sensual and seductive. The medium-bodied palate offers succulent, fleshy, quite grippy tannins that lend this Romanée-Saint-Vivant volume and mass. It is very well balanced and pure, and feels structured, almost Richebourg-like, toward the persistent finish. This is a very serious Grand Cru that will offer 20 to 30 years of drinking pleasure.

Domaine de L'Arlot is one of the seminal properties in Nuits St. Georges. The domaine was co-owned by Jean-Pierre de Smet, who spent eight years alongside Jacques Seysses of Domaine Dujac before taking over L’Arlot in 1986. Today, the domaine consists of 14 hectares planted to mostly Pinot Noir, with 5% devoted to Chardonnay for their ultra-rare white wines. The oldest vines are 70+ years old, with the average age close to 50. While the estate’s core is in the monopoles of Clos des Forêts Saint Georges and Clos de l’Arlot, the domaine also consists of two parcels in the village of Vosne-Romanée that were added in 1991. In 2015 the very talented Geraldine Godot took over the domaine. With Geraldine’s inspired leadership, Domaine de l’Arlot is committed to maintaining their classic, elegant style of terroir driven wines in hopes of providing the sort of divine pleasure only classic Burgundy delivers.
