Detailed Description
Strong crimson garnet, violet core, ruby ââred reflections, wide ocher rim. Fine nougat on the nose, sweet spices, a hint of coconut, aromas reminiscent of vintage port, truffle and mocha. Dark berries on the palate, oriental spices, firm tannins, long, dense wine with a mineral aftertaste, sweet roasted coffee notes in the aftertaste.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: Perhaps the biggest Romanée-St.-Vivant produced at this domaine, the 2003 offers aromatics as well as flavors reminiscent of black fruits drenched in dark chocolate. Full-bodied, velvety-textured, as well as concentrated, it is immensely ripe, crammed with tannin, and vaunts an amazingly long finish.
- Burghound: This is surprisingly fresh and elegant with its pretty floral and overtly spicy notes that add nuance to the ripe but not roasted black fruit aromas. While clearly well-concentrated and powerful there is fine precision, refinement and purity to the strikingly complex and vibrant flavors that are supple on the mid-palate but quite firm on the finish. There is the barest trace of warmth but it's a background note and overally this is superbly classy juice. In the context of what is typical for the DRC RSV this is a big but stylish wine that should live for years, indeed it is still very much on the way up - patience! Note that in July 2017 I had a bottle that displayed noticeable brett and it was enough to detract from the overall sense of freshness.
Producer Information
Domaine de la RomanĂ©e-Conti, or DRC as it is commonly known, is easily Burgundy's best-known and most collectible wine producer. Based in the Burgundy village of Vosne-RomanĂ©e, the domaine sells wines from eight different grand cru vineyards that span the length of the CĂŽte d'Or. The most famous comes from the eponymous RomanĂ©e-Conti vineyard, and on average is the most expensive wine in the world. The domaine predominately produces Pinot Noir-based wines from 28 hectares (69 acres) of grand cru vineyard. Alongside RomanĂ©e-Conti are La TĂąche, RomanĂ©e-Saint-Vivant and Richebourg in Vosne-RomanĂ©e; plus Ăchezeaux and Grands Ăchezeaux bottlings. Fruit from Corton-Bressandes, Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Renardes is combined in a single Corton Grand Cru red. There are three white (Chardonnay) wines made. Only one of these, the Montrachet is made widely avilable. A BĂątard-Montrachet and a Bourgogne Hautes CĂŽtes de Nuits are not publically distributed. Of course, La RomanĂ©e-Conti is the domaine's most famous asset, and the amount of wine made from less than 2ha (5 acres) of land amounts to just 6000 bottles a year. The vineyard has a long history, dating back to the Abbey of Saint-Vivant in the 13th Century. It took on the RomanĂ©e name in 1631, and the Conti in 1760.Today, DRC is owned in part by the de Villaine family and in part by the Leroy family. Aubert de Villaine is the figurehead of the company now â although it was famously run by Lalou Bize-Leroy for a time, until a dispute saw her ousted from control.
