      Detailed Description

The wine shows aromas and flavors of red berries, herbs, and purple flowers. The palate is rich with ripe fruit and medium weight with bright acidity and fine tannins. Red Burgundy might be the world’s most flexible food wine. The wine’s high acidity, medium body, medium alcohol, and low tannins make it very food-friendly. Red Burgundy, with its earthy and sometimes gamey character, is a classic partner to roasted game birds, grilled duck breast, and dishes that feature mushrooms, black truffles, or are rich in umami.

        Reviews:

        • Burghound: A deft touch of wood frames a strongly reduced nose. More positively, the velvety, round and utterly seductive large-scaled flavors are brimming with dry extract on the mouth coating and quite serious finish that displays sensational length and stunning complexity. This is a powerful Ech that is also clearly built to age. Note that my rating implicitly assumes that the reduction displayed by the nose will eventually dissipate as it does not show up on the palate.
        • Wine Advocate: The 2016 Echézeaux Grand Cru was affected by the frost: 40% to 45% of the vines were lost. Etienne said that the lieu-dit of Les Créots is an incredible vineyard and managed to overcome what could have been much worse damage. It has a beautiful, sensual, very pure bouquet with Morello, crushed strawberry and hints of vanilla pod. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and gorgeous black cherry and tart redcurrant fruit. It does not possess the length or density of the 2015, although I feel it shrugged off the frost damage better than Grivot's Clos Vougeot.

        Producer Information

Etienne Grivot succeeded his father, Jean, in 1987, and today presides over 15 hectares of vines spread accross Nuits, Vosne, Vougeot and Echézeaux. This is one of the modern-day, benchmark Burgundian domaines. The estate’s densely-planted old vines (the average age is 40 years old) produce naturally-low yields and, together with Etienne’s organic approach to viticulture and sensible winemaking, result in vivid, pure, very well-balanced Burgundies. The wines are much more softly extracted than when Etienne first started, the winemaking is incredibly flexible, depending on the vintage, but usually only 5% of stalks are retained, and rarely more than a third of the barrels are new. A reference point for good Burgundy.
