Detailed Description
The 2015 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet is fresh and complex, a beautiful refection of its warm, low-yielding vintage - balancing classic Spottswoode elegance with plush tannins and concentrated fruit. Opaque deep purple. Packed. Lifted and perfumey. Voluptuous, with a great deal of youthful intensity, demonstrating primary blue and black fruit characters. An enticing potpourri of bakery aromas - chocolate-covered cherries, caramel, spice, coffee bean, boysenberry cream, black cherry, vanilla, crÚme brûlée, with hints of bay leaf and tobacco, and wonderful underlying minerality. Amazing balance, long finish, structured tannins.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: Evolving into a fine, mature wine that's balanced and even a bit restrained, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon combines hints of mint with cherry fruit on the nose, then glides easily across the medium to full-bodied palate in a wash of silky tannins before ending long and softly dusty. It's a refined, elegant effort that should continue to drink well for another 15 years or so.
- James Suckling: Glorious aromas of blackcurrant, sage and blackberry. Stone undertones. Full body, round and silky with a focused and bright finish of dark berry and mint. Goes on for minutes. Such finesse and balance. Coolness. Better in 2020.
Producer Information
Spottswoode is a historic, Napa Valley wine producer, located in St Helena. The family-owned estate have been producing wine from Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah for multiple generations. The estate itself was established in 1882 by George Schonewald. As well as planting the vineyard, he also constructed the Victorian farmhouse which remains on the estate today. It came under its current ownership in 1972 when the Novak family purchased the estate. The first Cabernet Sauvignon wine released in 1982. Today, there is 42 acres (17 hectares) of vines planted, most of which are Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards have been certified organic since 1992. The flagship wine of the portfolio is the Spottswoode's Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. It is aged for 20 months in French oak, two thirds of which is new, and depending on the vintage may have a proportion of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc is predominantly produced from estate fruit, with a small portion sourced from surrounding vineyards. Spottswood also produce a second Cabernet Sauvignon wine, the Lyndenhurst, and tiny amounts of Syrah that are bottled under the name 'Field Book'.
