Wine Advocate: A vintage that saw rain in late September, the 2008 Syrah Cailloux Vineyard is a co-fermented blend of 90+% Syrah and the balance Viognier, that wasnât harvested until October 10. Hitting 14.1% natural alcohol, itâs drinking beautifully today and offers a meaty, iodine, peppery and plum-pit bouquet to go with a full-bodied, refined and elegant feel on the palate. It shows more and more floral and rose petal qualities with time in the glass, has plenty of mid-palate depth and will have no issues evolving for another decade.
- Wine Spectator: Polished, refined in structure and exuberant in flavor, bursting with cherry, smoke, paprika and tar character, finishing with a mineral edge. This has a steely balance behind the open texture, and the finish just rolls and rolls.
Producer Information
In 1972, Chuck Wagner started Caymus Vineyards with his parents, Charlie and Lorna, with a humble plan and an uncharted future. The Wagner family were farmers with deep roots in the Napa Valley â in 1857, Chuck Wagnerâs great-great grandfather captained a wagon train to California from Bible Grove, Missouri. Working together for decades, Chuck Wagner and his parents established the familyâs work ethic, appetite for innovation, down-to-earth sensibility, and deep appreciation of the pleasures of good food and wine enjoyed with family and friends.Today, Caymus Cabernet is one of Napa Valleyâs most celebrated wines. Made from grapes farmed in 8 of Napa Valleyâs 16 appellations, the wine has a signature style that is dark in color, with rich fruit and ripe tannins â as approachable in youth as it is in maturity. Chuck Wagner continues to make two world-renowned Cabernet Sauvignons â Caymus Napa Valley and Caymus Special Selection. Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon is the only wine in the world to be honored twice as Wine Spectator magazineâs âWine of the Yearâ for the 1984 and 1990 vintages.
