Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: For the 2018 Cote Rotie la Landonne, Pierre Rostaing put together a blend from two barrels. Wow. Toast and mocha notes frame raspberries and blueberries in this medium to full-bodied offering. It's simultaneously rich, silky and concentrated. Packed with flavor and depth, it looks as if it will be approachable within a couple of years yet be capable of evolving for a couple of decades.
- Decanter: There is a good sense of freshness to the aromatics here - juniper and a touch of black pepper, with a dense tannic base, very plush in texture, with exceptional finesse. It has a long finish and no excessive alcohol. A relatively fruity and approachable La Landonne this year. The winemaking at Domaine Rostaing is now in the hands of René's son Pierre, and it follows the same format for all the Côte-Rôties: four weeks in tank, 18 months in oak, limited new oak, natural yeasts, and as many stems as possible - 100% in this case. Picked around 6th Sept, early for the appellation.
Producer Information
Domaine Rostaing, often called René Rostaing after its founder, is a leading wine estate in the Côte-Rôtie region of the Northern Rhône, and particularly known for its Syrah-based wines. The first Rostaing wine was produced in 1971 when the estate covered a mere 1.5 hectares (3.7 acres) split between the Côte Blonde and La Landonne subregions of the Côte Rôtie. This slowly grew as Rostaing purchased additional plots and the took over his uncle's and his father-in-law's vineyards. Today the domaine has just over seven hectares (18 acres) of vineyards in the wider Côte Rôtie – a sizeable holding by the region's standards – plus one hectare (2.5 acres) in the white wine (Viognier-based) appellation of Condrieu, which produces the La Bonnette cuvée. Rostaing also owns a small plot in Lézardes, on the northern border of Côte Rôtie, where he makes Syrah and Viognier wines under the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes designation. Rostaing makes several Côte Rôtie wines. This includes cuvées from both the La Landonne and Côte Blonde subregions, and the Ampodium, which comes from other sites within the appellation. These are aged in a mix of regular and large-format barrels, with a very small proportion of new oak. Rostaing also owns an estate near Nîmes where it produces wines under the Languedoc appellation.h.
