Producer Information
Located in the foothills of the Serra D’Ossa, only 22mi (35km) north of Evora, Herdade da Maroteira is a 330ac-estate which has belonged to the same Anglo-Portuguese family for over 5 generations since mid-19th century. Back then, Robert Reynolds invested in the Alentejo cork oak forest to supply the Port Wine industry need in the north of Portugal. For around 150 years, besides cork, the estate produced mainly livestock and a bit of olives. In 2000, Philip Mollet, current owner and manager, revolutionised the farm strategy and decided to plant vineyard. The chosen Syrah grape variety turned out to be an outstanding success in the form of the internationally acclaimed Cem Reis wine. Later, a delightful selection of reds, whites and rosés was the outcome of the Alicante Bouschet, Aragonêz and Touriga Nacional plantation in an open valley. This area of cork and holm oak forest and vineyards is ideal for relaxing in a historic area of beautiful scenery in Alentejo, Portugal. This is the perfect environment to quietly venture among the trees with focus on the amazing world of cork, on a jeep tour or hike… and birdwatching (Birdwatching) or stargazing (Stargazing). Typical seasonal agricultural activities can take place around you: manual cork and grape harvesting, sheep lambing and shearing, olive picking. During autumn and winter, black pigs from Spain (from which the bellota hams are made) roam freely on the farm, feeding on the acorn.
