The nose is engaging, a mixture of red and black fruit, gravel and spice. Juxtaposed against the 1996 Haut-Batailley I find more energy in this, despite being ten years older. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, earthy black fruit with good acidity. It is not a complex Pauillac and the finish feels a tad staid, although the residue of white pepper and bay leaf on the finish is very pleasurable.

James Suckling: Elegant and tasty with cedar, plum and currant flavors of moderate depth an d intensity. It is one of 18 estates with the status of Fifth Growth, awarded from the 1855 classification of Bordeaux. The château building, which is constructed in an almost rustic, Basque style, sits at the southwestern end of the appellation area, roughly two kilometers (1.2 miles) or so due west of Château Latour and Château Pichon Longueville-Baron. The estate was once a part of the larger, neighboring, Château Batailley which sits just to the north of Haut-Batailley. Batailley was bought in 1932 by the brothers François and Marcel Borie, who divided it in two in 1942 to avoid conflict in inheritance. François took the smaller property that did not include the physical château and named the estate Haut-Batailley. He increased the size of the estate by buying vineyards, including purchases of plots in 1951 from the Fourth Growth Château Duhart-Milon.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0050/2395/7103/products/21_131d397f-bfeb-441c-a1c4-a8f28d8c2d20.png?v=1671632983
