Not surprisingly, the 2012 Ausone is one of the candidates for the wine of the vintage. Inky purple in color, with notes of crushed rocks, spring flowers and blueberry and black raspberry, the wine grows on the palate, offering up amazing concentration. There is no heaviness or cloying characteristics. Pure, rich, full-bodied and, although accessible, it is capable of lasting 30 or more years. It is undoubtedly an old vineyard but it took a long time to come out of anonymity. From the end of the 18th century, its history becomes clearer: it is successively the property of the Cantenat then of the Lafargue and still currently belongs to the descendants of these families. In the middle of the 19th century, informal classifications show it among the very best wines of Saint-Emilion. However, it was not until the 1970s and the arrival of Pascal Delbeck as manager to see Ausone appear among the greatest wines of Bordeaux.
