In 1929, Florent Viale’s great-grandparents moved to the farm as sharecroppers and planted their first vineyard at the foot of the Hermitage hill, which amounted to little more than two acres. Florent’s grandparents succeeded them—first as sharecroppers, then as farmers—and considerably enlarged the area. Florent’s father was able to purchase the farm from his father in 1959, and his marriage to the daughter of a wine grower in Mercurol further increased the size of the estate.
