Founded by Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who arrived at the estate in the 1930s, the winery was born out of a desire to create a Bordeaux-style wine in Italy. Mario believed that the gravelly soils of his coastal estate, combined with a unique Mediterranean climate, were perfectly suited for Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, which he planted in the 1940s despite conventional Italian practices.
