Dick Stoll, who was the Master Distiller of Michter’s at the time, received a phone call from the bank on that day informing him to send everyone home, turn off the lights and lock the doors… for good. The bank was taking over the entire property until unpaid debts were settled. Over the course of the next 3 years, locals (and some “self-guided tourists”) slowly vandalized and looted the deserted buildings. They took whatever they could find including memorabilia, gift shop decanters and possibly a few barrels of whiskey with them.
