The distillery produces its own molasses, using sugar cane grown in south-east Cuba, which is then distilled before the rum is allowed to rest in white oak barrels. The casks are stored at The Don Pancho warehouse, and legend has it that due to its proximity to nearby train tracks, the barrels gently tremble as trains rumble by! Presumably, that’s where the name comes from. In the 1959 revolution, Cuba’s rum industry was nationalised and Ron Santiago de Cuba rums began to be made by the state at the former Matusalem distillery in Cuba’s Sierra Maestra region from sugarcane molasses.
