The palate is supremely well balanced with fine tannins that frame the undergrowth and cedar-tinged black fruit. It is wonderfully composed, a stately Lafite-Rothschild that is at its peak. According to some old-timers, the wine has been fully mature for almost 30 years. It possesses that extraordinary Lafite fragrance of minerals, lead pencil, cedar, and spice. It is velvety-textured, wonderfully round, and sweet, but so well-delineated and balanced.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #222223;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #9f250d;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eVinous:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e The 1953 Lafite-Rothschild surpassed my expectations. Deep in color with only a thin brick core, the bouquet is atypical for Lafite-Rothschild in that there is no holding back, rather an outpouring of blackberry, raspberry confit, crushed stone, pencil lead and a touch of spice, delivered with breathtaking poise and detail. It frankly knocks the 1953 Latour into a cocked hat, perhaps not least because it may be the only vintage that has the audaciousness of its rival. The palate is medium-bodied with crystalline delineation, a hold-onto-your-seats sense of focus that is equal to anything I have tasted from this era. Then it gracefully winds down towards quite a sensual and mineral-driven finish that exhausts all the superlatives and you are rendered tongue-tied by the prodigious brilliance of this wine. It traces its beginnings to back to 1967, when Sergio Manetti bought a vacation home in Chianti and planted two hectares (five acres) of vines with the intention of making some wine for friends and family. The first vintage in 1971 was such a success that Manetti took a few bottles to the Vinitaly wine show in Venice where the wine garnered such a positive reaction that Manetti made winemaking his new career. Montevertine is now known as a cult producer of high-quality, Sangiovese-dominant red wines from Tuscany. Montervertine was established within the boundaries of what became Chianti Classico and, initially, Manetti used the Chianti Classico designation for his wines. However, he soon became frustrated at the manditory inclusion of at least 10 percent of the white grape Trebbiano in the blend, and left the Chianti Classico Consortium in 1981. History sided with Manetti and, in 2006, Chianti Classico outlawed the use of white grapes. Despite the change, Montervertine still uses the broader IGT Toscana classification. As a result of this, Montevertine wines are often thought of as Super Tuscans, although none of the wines use any foreign grape varieties often associated with the category, like Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. All Montevertine wines are Sangiovese-dominant, with small amounts of Colorino and Canaiolo – making them classic Chianti blends. The Montevertine vineyards are some of the highest in Chianti with an elevation of 425 meters (1395 feet) above sea level. Around 90 percent of the vineyards are planted to the Sangiovese grape, with the rest yielding Colorino and Canaiolo. The grand vin is among the most highly rated and priced wines in the world, and is generally regarded as the most exuberant and powerful of all Bordeaux. It was famously added to the First Growths set out in the 1855 Classification in 1973. The château started life as Brane-Mouton, and was among the best in Bordeaux through the 18th and early 19th Centuries, although there was a dip in quality and price in the 1840s. The Rothschild family bought (and renamed) the property in 1853 and quickly restored its reputation, but not in time for the 1855 Classification of Médoc wines, in which Mouton was only ranked a second growth wine. Lafite, Latour, Margaux and Haut-Brion attained Premier Cru Classé status. Baron Philippe de Rothschild took control in 1922 and introduced château bottling in 1924, requiring the construction of the iconic barrel hall. At the end of World War II he also instigated the commissioning of a different artist each year to design the label. But his crowning achievement was the promotion of Mouton in 1973 to first growth status – the first change to the 1855 order. The estate comprises 84 hectares (207 acres) of vineyards, mainly on gravel-based soils, and is situated in the northern part of the commune just south of Château Lafite Rothschild. Carruades de Lafite is the second wine, with a strong following in its own right. More Merlot (30-50 percent) appears in the final blend. It is aged for 18-20 months, with 80 percent in barrels and 20 percent in tank. The Lafite Rothschild vineyard covers around 112 hectares (277 acres) on sunny, well-drained sites made up of fine gravel and sand over limestone subsoil. The vineyard is divided into three parts: the vines on the hillsides around the château provide the core material for the grand vin, while the adjacent Carruades plateau to the west is more responsible for the second wine that bears its name. Additionally a 4.5ha (11 acre) plot in Saint-Estèphe also belongs to the estate; unusually it has permission to include the fruit in its Pauillac-classified wines.
