      Detailed Description

The 2019 Bethel Heights Casteel Chardonnay is a vibrant, elegant Oregon white wine with aromas of flint, white peach, and spring blossoms.

      Producer Information

Bethel Heights Vineyard is one of the foundational, pioneering family wine estates of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Established in 1977 in the rugged Eola-Amity Hills AVA, it was co-founded by twin brothers Ted and Terry Casteel along with their partners Pat Dudley and Marilyn Webb, who cleared an abandoned walnut orchard to plant their first vines. Today, the estate has gracefully transitioned to second-generation winemaker Ben Casteel, who took over from his father in 2006. Managing roughly 80 to 82 acres of organically farmed estate land—which incorporates the original home vineyard alongside the adjacent Justice and Lewman properties—Bethel Heights is globally renowned for housing some of the last surviving, own-rooted, pre-phylloxera Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines in the region, planted between 1977 and 1979. The estate's singular terroir is shaped by thin, volcanic Nekia soils over old ocean basalt, situated directly in the path of the powerful, freezing Aeolian maritime winds that rush through the Van Duzer Corridor from the Pacific Ocean, dropping night temperatures sharply to safeguard natural, electric acidity in the grapes. In the cellar, Ben Casteel pursues a highly precise, parcel-by-parcel micro-vinification philosophy: each individual vineyard block is harvested and aged independently using indigenous wild yeasts and minimal extraction to fully articulate the site's natural tension. This yields a highly acclaimed, chiseled portfolio of single-block estate wines—most famously their deep, structural Flat Block and Southeast Block Pinot Noirs (crafted from original Pommard and Wädenswil clones), the ethereal Aeolian Pinot Noir, and their critically adored, mineral-driven High Wire Chardonnay.
