Born in Aix-en-Provence in 1975 and educated in viticulture in Beaune, Barret stepped in to manage the vineyards originally planted by his grandfather after WWII. Rejecting industrial machinery, he completely eliminated tractors in 2012, choosing instead to till the estate’s steep, decomposed granite terraces using mules, horses, and manual labor. “The vines are planted on steep south\/south-east-facing terraces which are carved into the granite rock of Cornas,” pushing the 40- to 55-year-old Syrah roots deep into the earth to deliver highly concentrated, low-yield fruit. Driven by a strict biodynamic philosophy certified since 2002, Barret treats the vineyard as a living ecosystem, creating dedicated green spaces and watering holes to foster wild biodiversity.
