The vines are divided into two distinct plots – the 20ha Gauggiole vineyard and the 42ha Capanna vineyard. An elevation between 250 and 460 metres (820 to 1509 feet) allows for wind penetration into the canopy as well as a diurnal temperature shift to encourage ripening. Prima Petra is Castiglion del Bosco's second estated, located on the Tuscan coast. It has 11 hectares (27 acres) planted to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The estate has a long history stretching back several centuries, apparent in many of the structures still standing on its property. It has also been influential in the history of wine in Montalcino, being a founding members of the Consorizo del Vino Brunello di Montalcino in the 1960s.
