The winery was established by Michele Chiarlo in 1956 with inaugural vintages of Barbera and Moscato from Asti. The winery produced its first Barolo in 1958 and, in 1987, bought part of the prestigious Cerequio vineyard, which is informally considered to be one of Barolo's \"cru\" sites. In 1996, Chiarlo purchased La Court estate in Nizza, the source of its highest-quality Barbera d'Asti. While the winery is relatively young for the region, Chiarlo himself is from four generations of Piedmont winemakers.
